Music for a Scene from Shelley, Op.7

One of the best loved and most frequently performed American composers of the twentieth century, Samuel Barber developed his own highly individual voice quite independent of the modernist mainstream. Unquestionably, one of Barber's most popular works, the Violin Concerto is a key work, marking his transition from dreamy neo-romanticism to a more modernist style. Music for a Scene from Shelley is an earlier work, dating from 1933, and seeks to evoke the atmosphere of Shelley's poetry in musical terms. The Serenade is an arrangement of an earlier work for string quartet written when Barber was just eighteen. The ballet suite Souvenirs is made up of short dance movements in different genres.

Bartok's two Violin Concertos are among the 20th century masterpieces for the instrument. Completed when he was a youthful 27, the first is a tender work dedicated to a young violinist, Stefi Geyer, in whom he had confided his innermost feelings. It was never performed in his lifetime, and remained unpublished until 1959. Bartok's Second Concerto was written thirty years after the first. It is a frequently turbulent score which yet contains one of the most exquisite slow movements in the violin repertoire.

Teacher, composer and conductor, the Swiss-born Ernest Bloch was in 1916 engaged to conduct a touring ballet company in the United States. Though he returned briefly to his native country in the 1930s, he spent the rest of his life teaching and composing in North America. It was here that he established a reputation as a 'Jewish' composer, frequently using authentic Hebrew thematic material as the basis of his music, the Suite hébraïque being a particular example. This inspiration is also evident in both Violin Sonatas, deeply emotional works of a rhapsodic and free-flowing nature. Composed in the 1920s, they were soon taken into the violin repertoire.

Many consider the Paraguayan-born Barrios to be the greatest guitarist composer of all time. Yet his music lay undiscovered and unappreciated until the mid-1970s when comprehensive editions of his music appeared.
