Here are the fascinating and very different lives of six great composers who left their mark on history. Each composer's music reflects his personality as well as the time in which he lived; and even though all this music crosses the centuries, each composer is more popular now than he was in his lifetime. Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons', Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor for organ, Mozart's 'Eine kleine Nachtmusik, the famous opening to Beethoven's Symphony No.5, Dvorak's dreamy Symphony No.9 'From the New World' and Shostakovich's exciting Symphony No.5 are all as pwerful in the 21st century as they were when they were written.
Aled Jones tells the story of their lives with a light touch and more than 75 music excepts.

Prokofiev: Prelude in C, Op.12 No.7
Salzédo: Ballade, Op.28
This recital of mainly late Romantic harp repertoire not only illustrates the important contribution of French composers to the genre but some of the innovative techniques introduced by composers of the early twentieth century. Concluding with the virtuosic 'Ballade' composed by the great Franco-American harpist Carlos Salzédo, the disc includes a movement from the Harp Concerto 'And then at night I paint the stars' by the contemporary Canadian composer, Kelly-Marie Murphy, written for Judy Loman. Serenade for Solo Violin, Strings, Harp and Percussion
Facsimilie: Choreographic Essay for Orchestra
Divertimento for Orchestra
Conductor, composer, educator, pianist: Leonard Bernstein was, without question, the greatest musician America has ever produced. Bernstein described his Serenade, inspired by Plato's Symposium, as a "series of related statements in praise of love" and considered it his "most satisfying" work. Of particular note is the slow lyrical melody in the first movement, Phaedrus, soon to be immortalised in Maria from West Side Story. Facsimilie, a work by turns acerbic and tender, depicts post-war malaise and the spiritual vacuum of modern man. In the Divertimento for Orchestra, composed for the Boston Symphony on their centenary, Bernstein enjoys himself with many musical puns and breezy humour. Price: £5.50

The 'liriche de camera' which punctuate Verdi's long career, often served as a forging ground for his treatment of dramatic verse. If Italy's greatest opera composer was at his best in writing melodies that communicate a character's emotions, that skill was also ideally applied to his song writing which, on this recording, touches on subjects as diverse as the stars, seduction, chimney-sweeps, exile, wine and devotion to the Holy Virgin. Dennis O'Neill, a leading Verdi specialist, has been described by The Gramophone as 'the most Italianate of British tenors for many a long day'. Price: £5.50

Dragons! is a dramatic and comical new musical for Key Stages 2 and 3 by poet Nick Toczek (the author of Golden Apple's Sleeping Beauty's Dream) and the acclaimed composer Malcolm Singer.
Fergus is different from all the other kids - he is turning into a dragon! He and his imaginary friends are taken through their paces at the School For Dragons, where they are taught how to speak Dragonese and how to be as hard as nails! Soon he discovers that he is not the only person he knows who is also a dragon and that in fact these fiery fiends are everywhere!
Dragons! contains nine original, varied and challenging songs, and includes optional solos and instrumentals. It comes with a rhyming play, which is also suitable for Key Stages 2 and 3, but the songs can also be sung alone as a song cycle by choirs.
The matching CD contains a complete performance of all the songs, plus imaginative backing tracks to sing along to.

Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Op.103: Allegro, Poema (Lento ma non troppo), Allegro giocoso
Although he was renowned for his choral music and his eleven symphonies, Rubbra composed a small number of concertante pieces and concertos notable for their eloquent musicality rather than mere virtuosoty. At the heart of the very fine 1959 Violin Concerto, which unfolds characteristicallly in large, seamless spans, is the deeply reflective slow movement, a musical 'poem' of rapt meditation and yearning. In all the works on this disc, Rubbra's orchestration is distinctive for its range of colour and timbre, its precise judgement of weight and texture, and passages of great beauty. Price: £5.50

There are few more technically demanding soprano rôles than that of Norma. In this 1954 studio taping Maria Callas gives one of her most dramatically intense, yet delicately nuanced performances on record, demonstrating an astonishing range and variety of expression that she did not quite replicate in the later stereo re-make. 'A classic, irreplaceable recording' (Penguin Guide to Opera on Compact Disc).

West Side Story: Bernstein's original score
Maria: Betsi Morrison
Tony: Mike Eldred
Anita: Anita Cooke
Riff: Robert Dean
Bernado: Michael San Giovanni
Leonard Bernstein has been lionized for his abilities as concert pianist, conductor, composer, author and teacher. It was his extraordinary versatility that enabled West Side Story to elevate musical theatre to new heights. The ability to combine serious ballet music and classically constructed fugues with memorable popular melodies, jazzy, finger-snapping tunes, heart wrenching love songs and vaudevillian humor could only have come from one man, the true Renaissance musician of the 20th century. This recording of his theatrical masterpiece presents Bernstein's score as he originally conceived it, prior to its film and Broadway renditions. Price: £5.50
These authoritative editions of well-known arias are an ideal introduction to singing in Italian, as well as providing appealing material for the advanced performer. They contain a varied selection of operatic arias, songs and movements from solo cantatas by well-known composers, including Monteverdi, Alessandro Scarlatti and Handel, as well as examples by lesser-known figures, such as Caccini, Perti and Caldara. Volume I includes arias ranging from the rarely heard to the more familiar, such as 'Lascia ch'io pianga' and the cavatina 'Caro mio ben', while Volume II contains many of the best-known arias from the repertoire, including 'Già il sole dal Gange', 'Sebben, crudele' and Vittoria, vittoria'.

Described by the Daily Mail, following her death, as 'The singer who stirred the world more than other artists of her time', Kathleen Ferrier proved to be the most significant British female singer to emerge after the end of the Second World War. Throughout her professional career she sang songs by British composers and settings of British folk-songs in recitals and broadcasts. The sincerity and poise of her performance of Blow the Wind Southerly are such that it has become her 'song' to her many admirers. Price: £4.75

An Introduction to Aida, written by Thomson Smillie, narrated by David Timson.
This series introduces, in words and music, the plot and background of the major operas. Using the principle themes and arias, taken from the Naxos recording of the complete work, Thomson Smillie is informative yet entertaining, enabling the listener to get more from this remarkable art form.
Ancient Egypt and the war with Ethiopia is the setting for Verdi's grandest opera. It is the story of the love between Rhadames, the Egyptian general and Aida, an Ethiopian slave, and the jealousy of Amneris, daughter of the King of Egypt. It was written in 1871 to a commission from the Khedive of Egypt to inaugurate the new opera house in Cairo. Price: £4.75
An Introduction to Rigoletto, written by Thomson Smillie, narrated by David Timson.
Rigoletto is simply wonderful entertainment. It is uncanny to listen to the opening ten minutes or so and recognise a dozen superb tunes. It is also much more - a daring (for its time) attack on aristocratic privilege, a tender love story, and an impassioned appeal on behalf of the disadvantaged, all set to music of such wealth and beauty that, with its sister operas La traviata and Il trovatore, it has almost defined Italian opera for 150 years. Price: £4.75
An Introduction to Falstaff, written by Thomson Simillie, narrated by David Timson.
Verdi's Falstaff repays careful study with real pleasure. It is opera's happiest irony that the great Italian master should cap a career - distinguished for its blood-and-thunder tragic masterpieces - with the greatest comic opera in the Italian repertory. The genius of Shakespeare is harnessed (in a miracle of compression) by master-librettist Boito to give the eighty-year-old Verdi a superb libretto, on which he lavished more wonderful tunes than most composers manage in a lifetime. Falstaff is the last great Italian comic opera and a worthy end to the tradition. Price: £4.75
An Introduction to La Traviata, written by Thomson Simillie, narrated by David Timson.
La Traviata owes its enduring popularity to a superb story of young love and fateful sacrifice, set to music by Italy's master melodist at the peak of his powers. Interest and poignancy are added by the fact that this is a true story - the baritone 'heavy' is Alexander Dumas who wrote The Count of Monte Cristo. But it is the central figure, the heroine Violetta, the archetypal 'whore with the heart of gold', who dominates the piece. It is her opera and we love her for it. Price: £4.75
An Introduction to La Bohème, written by Thomson Smillie, narrated by David Timson.
La Bohème is one of three operas - the others are Carmen and Aida - believed to be the most popular ever written. In the case of La Bohème the reason is that it virtually defines the term 'romantic'. The poignant story of Mimi and Rodolfo is told in music of such tender beauty, allied, as always, to Puccini's intuition of what works in the theatre, resulting in an opera that readily appeals to our emotions and senses. Price: £4.75
An Introduction to Die Fledermaus, written by Thomsob Simillie, narrated by David Timson.
Die Fledermaus is one of the few operatic works to which the phrase 'nerver a dull moment' can be truthfully applied. From the explosive opening of the famous overture - reminiscent vof a volley of champagne corks - through to the surging energy of the 'Fledermaus Waltz' and the many comic numbers, of which the accelerando trio is the finest, up to such huge concerted numbers as the 'Duidu' finale to Act II, this is an operetta which almost incarnates nostalgia. Price: £4.75
Symphony No.1 'The Gothic': Part 1: I Allegro assai, II Lento espressivo, III Vivace, Part 2 - Te Deum: IV Te Deum laudamus: Allegro moderato, V Judex: Adagio molto solenne e religioso, VI Te ergo quaesumus: Moderato e molto sostenuto
Eva Jenisova: soprano, Dagmar Peckova: alto, Vladimir Dolezal: tenor, Peter Mikulas: bass, Slovak Opera Chorus, Slovak Folk Ensemble Chorus, Lucnica Chorus, Bratislava City Choir, Bratislava Children's Choir, Youth Echo Choir, Pavol Prochazka: chorus master
Havergal Brian's monumental 'Gothic Symphony', the first of 32 symphonies, with combined forces of around 1000 musicians is possibly the largest-scale symphony ever written, outdoing the extreme demands of Mahler, Strauss or Schoenberg. Inspired by Goethe's Faust and the Gothic Age as a period of almost unlimited expansion of human knowledge, it incorporates a vast number of musical influences, from medieval plainsong to early 20th century techniques. After the purely orchestral Part 1, Part 2 is a gigantic setting of the Te Deum inspired by the mighty Gothic Cathedral and the music that was sung in it.

'Dave Brubeck is a product not only of Judeo-Christian thinking but of the humanistic tradition of the Enlightenment. His identification with Jews, blacks, and with all who have known the lash of oppression is anything but accidental. The Hebrew Bible and most particularly the prophetic writings with their passion for social justice represent for him the essence of religious thought. Like Martin Luther King, Jr., Dave Brubeck is convinced that 'we must learn to live together as brothers, or die together as fools.' The Gates of Justice is a cantata based on Jewish texts, but its message is universal.' - Rabbi Charles D. Mintz Price: £4.75

Of the composers responsible for the renaissance in English music around the turn of the century, Butterworth, Parry and Bridge deserve greater mention than is commonly acredited to them. Before Butterworth's life was tragically cut short by the first world war, he produced some of the finest romantic music written in England. Powerful climaxes and soft lyrics, based on beautiful folk melodies combine to make A Shropshire Lad and The Banks of Green Willow works of undeniable dramatic strength. Coupled with these are Parry's stylish Lady Radnor Suite and Frank Bridge's generous and expansive Suite for Strings - largely undiscovered repertoire but totally refreshing and invigorating. Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, Op.10
Prelude and Fugue for 18-Part String Orchestra, Op.29
The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op.34 'Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Henry Purcell'
Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra started life as music for an educational film, designed to acquaint young people with the character of the various instruments and instrumental choirs that make up the modern orchestra. The work is a series of variations each spotlighting the individual instruments and each with a different character - some tender, some slightly sardonic, some mysterious, some straightforwardly humorous, all charged with great originality and wit. Britten's Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge were written as a homage to his teacher. Based on Bridge's Three Idylls for String Quartet, they proved immediately popular, launching Britten's international career and securing his place in British twentieth-century music. Price: £4.75

Mozart's church music was written principally for Salzburg Cathedral, where his father's position as Deputy Kapellmeister ensured that the young Mozart's works were performed. The two full settings of Vespers, written in 1779 and 1780, date from a period when Mozart was serving as court organist to the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg and reflect the reformed liturgical requirements of the time in music in concise splendour. Missa Salve intemerata: Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei
With all our heart
Discomfort them, O Lord
I call and cry to thee, O Lord
Along with his pupil William Byrd, Thomas Tallis was the finest composer of the English Renaissance. This recording, released to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Tallis's birth, features his largest compositions for the church. The motet Salve intemerata, written when Tallis was a young man, is one of the longest single movements of the entire 16th century. Scored for forty independent voices, Spem in alium, a work of Tallis's maturity, dwarfs any other Eng
