The Japanese composer Toshiro Mayuzumi enjoyed a distinguished international reputation on a par with that of Toru Takemitsu. Versatile and prolific, he contributed music for films, the theatre and broadcasts. This recording features two of his most rhythmically exciting and exotically scored works from the 1960s, the ballet Bugaku, based on ancient Japanese imperial dance music, and the Mandala Symphony, inspired by Buddhist teaching. Symphonic Mood was Mayuzumi's first orchestral composition, while the colourful Rumba Rhapsody here receives what is probably its first ever performance.

Perhaps no other British composer of the the first half of the twentieth century reveals a stylistic journey as varied as that of Frank Bridge, whose magnificent late-romantic orchestral suite The Sea is his best known work. Bridge's piano music can be divided into two periods. Up to the First World War much of it, such as the beautifully crafted Three Pieces, was composed in response to the demand for salon music. From the onset of the war, however, Bridge's music became much darker and more experimental. In Autumn reflects the deep emotional scars of the war and continues the more radical and intense harmonic voice that Bridge had developed in his piano masterpiece, the Sonata (1921-24).

Gerald Finzi made a significant contribution to British twentieth-century song and choral repertoire. His acute awareness of the frailty of existence had already found its musical expression in his settings of Thomas Hardy, before he began his Intimations of Immortality in the late 1930s. Set to nine of the eleven stanzas of Worsworth's Ode Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood, Finzi's Intimations is a deeply touching lament for the passing of the instinctive, intuitive freshness of childhood. His Ode for St Cecilia is an exultant paean honouring music's patron saint.
